Statement on the passing of George Raveling

George Raveling’s enormous influence – as a coach, educator and executive – was established on a global level long before he was enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. He is remembered for the relationships he built, the knowledge he shared, the compassion he displayed and his experiences as part of the civil rights movement. When George accepted the USBWA Dean Smith Award at a Coaches vs. Cancer luncheon outside Philadelphia nearly four years ago, his eyewitness description of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech created an unforgettable moment for everyone fortunate enough to be there. His inspirational messages on social media became, and remain, a source of encouragement and guidance for us all. The USBWA sends its condolences to the Raveling family, his friends, and everyone whose lives were enriched by his leadership and example.
